Passion Play Tour Itinerary

This unique tour through Germany is centered around the “Passion Play” in Oberammergau.

This amazing Passion Play performance follows the last week of Christ’s life from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem to his trial, crucifixion, and finally His Resurrection and His Ascension.

The Passion Play, performed on an open-air stage with a majestic mountain background, has been held every 10 years since 1634! Because of Covid-19, it was cancelled in 2020, and has been rescheduled to 2022.

During the 1633 when the Black Plague was sweeping through Europe, the villagers of Oberammergau promised God that if they were spared, they would perform the “Passion of Christ” every 10 years. After being spared, the town has honored this pledge for decades.

Salzburg

Made famous by the motion picture “Sound of Music”, Salzburg only relatively recently became part of Austria.  The fortress, Hohensalzburg, which dominates the skyline, was built in the 11th Century and remains one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe.  The old city is one of Europe’s best preserved Baroque towns north of the Alps and has earned  a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.  Salzburg (the name means “Salt Castle”) was the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  Travelers with the Mo Joe Passion Play tour will enjoy staying in a beautiful boutique hotel just outside the city with a view of the fortress in the distance.  There will be time to explore the historic old city after enjoying the pristine views of the Salzkammergut (Austria’s beautiful Lake District) from the deck of a boat.

OBERAMMERGAU

This unique tour through Germany is centered around the “Passion Play” in Oberammergau. This amazing Passion Play performance follows the last week of Christ’s life from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem to his trial, crucifixion, and finally His Resurrection and His Ascension. The Passion Play, performed on an open-air stage with a majestic mountain background, has been held every 10 years since 1634!  During the 1633 when the Black Plague was sweeping through Europe, the villagers of Oberammergau promised God that if they were spared, they would perform the “Passion of Christ” every 10 years. After being spared, the town has honored this pledge for decades.

Innsbruck

The capitol of the Austrian province of Tyrol, Innsbruck in the late 15th Century was the capitol of the Hapsburg Empire under Maximilian I.  Innsbruck, which means bridge over the Inn river, has had regional significance since Roman times because it offered the best crossing over the Inn River (which originates to the west in the Swiss Alps) for traffic heading north from Rome over the Alps at the Brenner Pass into Central Europe.  Nestled in the Inn River Valley with alpine peaks both to the north and south, Innsbruck features a picturesque baroque old city with a palace, a city tower, and access to a cable car ride to the top of the Tyrolean Alps.  Travelers on the Passion Play tour will have time to take a walking tour and ride the cable car with time left to attend Sacrament meeting at the Innsbruck Ward.

Neuschwanstein

The palace of Neuschwanstein (a name which means new swan stone) was one of three residences constructed by King Ludwig II in the late 19th century to fulfill his dreams of building in the authentic style of the old German Knights castles.  He loved the musical mythology of the contemporary composer Richard Wagner, and designed Neuschwanstein as a romantic interpretation of the Middle Ages.  The castle was never completed and after King Ludwig’s early death, was opened to the public for touring.  It currently receives more than 1 million visitors each year.  During WWII it was used as a storage facility for artwork stolen by Nazis across occupied Europe.  Travelers with the Mo Joe Travel Passion Play tours will take a tour and enjoy a lunch here enroute from Salzburg Austria to Lucerne Switzerland.

Lucerne

Along with several other Central Swiss towns, Lucerne gained a measure of self-rule by forcibly ousting the Hapsburgs from the area in the 14th Century.  The Swiss have jealously guarded their independence since, remaining unentangled by international alliance for centuries.  Lucerne is beautifully situated on an alpine lake, with an outgoing river next to the old city and crossed by a picturesque wooden structure named Chapel Bridge.  The Mo Joe Travel Passion Play tours will spend three nights in a hotel near the old city, offering ample opportunity for exploration of this charming Swiss city.

Jungfrau

The Jungfrau Joch is a mountain saddle connecting two of the tallest Bernese Alp mountains: Jungfrau (the Maiden) and Moench (the Monk).  The saddle is the origination point for a massive alpine glacier, the Aletsch.  For over a century tourists have been able to travel by train to this saddle, with the terminal located at 11,332 ft elevation, highest in Europe.  Travelers with the Mo Joe Travel Passion Play Tour will enjoy a day’s outing into the Berner Oberland (Bernese Overland) for a ride by train to the top off Europe.

Bern

Bern is the capital of Switzerland and, with Lucerne and other Central Swiss cities, has a long history of self rule.  The structure of Bern’s city center is largely medieval, which features a clock tower with an elaborate medieval mechanism.  There will be time for exploration of this city, which contains a 4 mile long set or arcades, one of Europes longest covered shopping promenades.  Travelers with Mo Joe Travel Passion Play tour will have the choice to spend a whole day exploring Bern, or begin their day in the nearby LDS Swiss Temple and thereafter see the sites of the city.

montreux

Travelers with Mo Joe Travel Passion Play tour will enjoy a day long adventure by rail beginning in Lucerne and ending on Lake Geneva at Montreux.  Mid-day the group will stop at Interlaken and enjoy the Alpine scenery with lunch.  Along the route will be seen several lakes, three mountain passes, forests, streams, meadows, and more.  Come along to enjoy a leisurely day viewing the best of Swiss Alpine scenery.

Geneva

Situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, Chilean has been a military site since the Roman period.  Construction of the castle began a thousand years ago.  What remains today is a medieval castle which receives thousands of visitors each year.  Lord Byron made the castle famous in his Romantic era poem entitled “The Prisoner of Chillon”, which is about Francois de Bonivard, a political prisoner in the castle during the era of religious wars.  Travelers with the Mo Joe Travel Passion Play tour will enjoy a day trip out of Geneva by bus to the Castle Chillon and an informative and interesting tour of the castle itself.

The last two nights of the Mo Joe Travel Passion Play tour will be spent in Geneva, the most populous city in the French speaking part off Switzerland.  Geneva is a global city, home to many international agencies.  In the 16th Century, Geneva was the home of John Calvin.  After the Napoleonic Wars, Geneva was admitted to the Swiss confederacy, beginning its modern era.  Travelers with the Mo Joe Travel Passion Play tour will have time for walking around in this beautiful, modern, lakeside city.
